Adopted by the European Parliament and the Council of Europe, the ECO-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is a voluntary instrument developed for companies and other organizations as a systematic environmental management tool. Certification, i.e. the registration of environmental management systems, ensures that EMAS is one of the world’s most progressive indirect environmental protection mechanisms. EMAS is the same as ISO 14001, aimed at the ensuring the ongoing assessment and improvement of environment management in organisations as well as regularly reporting to the public and other interested parties as to performance. What makes EMAS different from other environmental management models and schemes is its transparency, frankness and the constant reporting of verified environmental data.
