322.000 Euros granted to NAPA ports for energy efficiency

08.10.2014

In the framework of the TEN-T (Trans -European Transport Network) call the European Union granted the cofinancing of the drawing up of the port's infrastructure development plan related to the supply of the Northern Adriatic ports with alternative energy products, in compliance with the EU directive, which envisages the introduction of new, more envrionmentally friendly fuels in the field of the transport. The value of the activity for the NAPA ports amounts to 322.000 €, the amount of the co-funding is 50 percent.

This activity is otherwise a part of a broader project Poseidon Med-Costa II, which amounts 5,1 mio €, whichof the leading partner will be the company Quatar Energy Europe, the partners from Italy, Greece and Quatarja as well as the terminal operator Contship Italia and the shipowner Grimaldi Group will take part in the project.

The project Poseidon Med-Costa II is the first project in the field of use of alternative sources of energy in the Mediterranean area and Adriatic, which will study the opportunities of the use of liquified natural gas as the propellent gas for vessels – the shipowners are increasingly opting for the construction resp. the remodelling of vessels powered by liquefied natural gas, which is ecologically more beneficial fuel.

Next year, a presentation of a comprehensive plan of use of alternative sources of energy in the Northern Adriatic ports will be given. In this framework, the possibility of a major use of the electric power in the Port of Koper will be examined, which means that the vessels could be connected to the electric power supply on the shore. Thereby, the greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced, the noise, produced by the of the aggregates, would be entirely avoided.

Relevant investments in modern technologies helping to reduce the environmental impact of the port's activity were realised in the Port of Koper. The principle of energy savings and efficiency is followed in the purchase of machinery and cranes, where the technology allows this, the machinery powered by the petroleum products is replaced by the electric one.
