A record in the throughput of containers

23.12.2007

On Sunday, 23rd of December 2007 Luka Koper's container terminal reached the mark of 300,000 handled containers, which places us among the best performing container terminals in the Upper Adriatic.  Just before the end of this year the record quantities of handled cars (500,000 units) and timber (1,000,000 m3) are followed by containers. In this way we exceeded last year's result for more than one third.  The presence of a great number of shipping lines and high quality services, which are a product of an excellent organisation on the terminal, are stimulating our hinterland customers which are choosing more and more often the transport route via Port of Koper.

"Containers are one of the less burdening cargoes for the environment as the goods are sheltered in a metal box, which remains unchanged on its transport route from the seller to the buyer. This is why we've chosen them as a priority”, explained Mr. Robert ńĆasar, president of the Management Board of Luka Koper during his congratulation speech to the employees.

On this occasion Mr. Andrej Cah, Director of the Container Terminal, rendered thanks to all the business partners for their trust and all the employees for their endeavour, will, hard work and sense of appurtenance to the company.  “Without the mentioned employees' values it would be impossible to manage such a strong traffic increase. At the end of this year we will have an increase of traffic of 90,000 TEUs in comparison to last year.”

Among all the cargo groups, the container traffic is the one which is growing at the major rate all over the world. The majority of ports are adjusting to this trend by increasing the capacities for containers. Shortly a tender for the executor of the building works related to the prolongation of the first pier and the erection of the necessary infrastructure, completely devoted to containers, will be concluded in Luka Koper. In the arriving year we will purchase also two ship-to-shore post – panamax cranes, which will enable the handling of vessels with the capacity of over 7,000 TEU. Right now we are able to accept vessel with the capacity up to 4,500 TEUs. Moreover In Luka Koper's strategy till year 2015 the construction of a third pier with the capacity of 1 million TEUs yearly is foreseen.
