Koper Received Best Destination Experience Award

25.03.2013

Representatives of Luka Koper, Koper Municipality, the Slovenian Tourist Board, Portorož-based Atlas Express tourist agency and Samer & Co. Shipping (Koper) attended the 2013 Cruise Shipping Fair in Miami, Florida, the world's largest cruise event, where for the ninth consecutive year they presented Koper and Slovenia as an attractive tourist destination.

Luka Koper’s Passenger Terminal has made significant progress over recent years, a fact acknowledged by ship owners and cruise tourists alike. As a result, Koper received a Best Destination Experience award from Cruise Insight magazine.

Conferences were organised within the Cruise Shipping Miami 2013 event in order to inform participants on news and prospects for the industry. Generally, new orders for ever larger vessels have been a primary indicator of growing demand in a sector in which the principal variable remains the cost of fuel. Of the twenty million people who went on cruises in 2012, six million were European, and Europe - and in particular the Mediterranean - recorded the largest growth as a destination.

Fifty-three cruise vessels carrying some 70,000 passengers are expected to call at Luka Koper's Passenger Terminal during 2013. The season will open on 25th April with the arrival of the Seabourn Spirit and will be closed by Thomson Dream on 15th November. Ten vessels are anticipated to visit Koper for the first time, whilst on eight occasions two ships shall be alongside simultaneously. The most regular visitor will be Thomson Cruises Thomson Majesty with 13 anticipated stopovers. Carrying nearly 3,000 passengers and 1,500 crew, the 317-metre long Celebrity Silhouette with 122,000 gross tons will be the largest vessel, calling at Koper on six occasions during 2013. Among the prestigious cruise ships coming to Koper are the ultra-luxury Silversea Silver Wind and Silversea Silver Spirit, as well as the Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn Spirit as well as Seabourn Legend known for its leading role in the 1997 film Speed 2. The schedule of arrivals is published online at http://www.luka-kp./en/port-handbook/sailing-list/cruise-ships.

Fifteen luxury cruise ships shall also be anchoring in the Bay of Piran this season and will also benefit from the facilities at Luka Koper's Passenger Terminal.
