POSCO to increase throughput in Koper by over one third next years

On Saturday, Mr Bojan Brank, the President of Luka Koper d. d.'s Management Board, hosted Mr Chung Joon-Yang, the CEO of the South-Korean company POSCO which is one of the largest steel-making companies in the world. The Slovene and Korean companies are, together with Daewoo Logistics and Daewoo International, shareholders of the company POSCO-ESDC (POSCO European Steel Distribution Center) with the registered office in Koper. Founded in May 2007 in Koper, the company developed the European distribution centre for steel products destined to Central and Eastern Europe.

This is an important business for Luka Koper; the cargo throughput for said company grew from 50,000 tonnes in 2007 to over 250,000 tonnes in 2012. Sheet metal coils aimed in particular at car industry and home appliance industry attribute for the major portion of cargo. Few years ago, the expansion of the European Union stimulated a number of South-Korean car manufacturers to establish new assembly plants in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. These companies use in car manufacture the same materials (sheet metal coils) as their main factory in Korea. For this reason the companies Daewoo Logistics (logistics operator) and Daewoo International (steel product trading) participated in the foundation of POSCO-ESDC which via the Port of Koper supplies South-Korean assembly plants in Central and Eastern Europe. This is also one of highly appreciated cargos for Luka Koper d. d. because a large amount of cars manufactured in said plants is transported via Koper to the markets of the Mediterranean countries.
