At the Port of Koper, European funds from several mechanisms are being successfully utilised to support infrastructure modernisation and the green transition. A number of completed and ongoing CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) projects already demonstrate these efforts, aimed at improving accessibility, connectivity, efficiency, and multimodal transport flows.
“We are proud that more than EUR 55 million in EU funding has been awarded to our professionally developed, innovative, and partnership‑based projects in recent years. Together with our own co‑investment, these funds enable us to accelerate the rollout of sustainable solutions, achieve major infrastructure improvements, and enhance our competitiveness on the European market. The future of green logistics can only be created through partnership – so we are particularly pleased that European institutions recognise the strategic role played by the Port of Koper in this context,” said Nevenka Kržan, President of the Management Board of Luka Koper.

Among the major completed projects under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is NAPA4CORE, which financed the extension of the southern part of Pier I. The EUR 5.5 million in EU funds was used to build 98.5 metres of new container quay (Berth 7D) and to arrange almost 25,000 m² of storage areas, increasing the terminal’s capacity to 1.2 million TEU. Another completed CEF project, ERIK‑PARKING, provided EUR 4.9 million in EU funding for the construction of a new external truck terminal in Sermin, which opened in January 2024. The facility offers 203 parking spaces, including those for ADR transport, and significantly improves conditions for drivers and logistics safety.
Currently underway is the large‑scale ACCESS2KOPERPORT project, which has been awarded over EUR 16 million through the CEF mechanism. The initiative includes the construction of the new Berth no. 12 and quay intended for project cargo handling and supporting the Car and RO‑RO Terminal. The works are expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Successful in securing European funding for climate transition projects
Since 2023, the Port of Koper has been participating in the GrEn4Tran project for which the consortium of partners received almost EUR 3 million in EU funding, of which around EUR 1 million is to be allocated to the Port of Koper. Within the project, the Port has already installed several electric charging stations (a total of 22 points), a solar power plant on Warehouse no. 16, and purchased nine new electric light‑duty vehicles for internal use across the terminals. By the end of 2026, more than 100 charging points will be installed throughout the port area.
In recent days, another green project has also been approved — GrEnEVO‑Tran, worth EUR 10.5 million. The Port of Koper is participating in the consortium together with Energetika Ljubljana and JP LPP, acting as the lead partner, and will be entitled to approximately EUR 8.3 million in funding. This strategic green transition project aims to accelerate the introduction of environmentally friendly alternative fuels in cargo‑handling processes and to decarbonise the logistics chain.
