The cranes, manufactured by the renowned Finnish company Konecranes, will replace the existing diesel-powered RTG cranes that have reached the end of their service life. In preparing the technical specifications, special attention was given to safety, operator comfort, and energy efficiency. With these new additions, Luka Koper’s Container Terminal will operate a total of 19 electrified RTG cranes, meaning that two-thirds of all RTG cranes are now electric – a significant step forward on our path toward decarbonisation.

Key advantages of the new cranes

The most important feature of the new cranes is their fully electric auxiliary drive which operates without a diesel generator and is equipped with a 44-kWh battery for movement between storage blocks. As a result, the cranes operate more quietly and have a reduced environmental footprint. An energy recuperation system allows power to be fed back into the grid when the spreader is lowered, while advanced safety systems help prevent container collisions and impacts with nearby structures. According to the plan, two cranes will become operational in September, with the remaining two following in October. With this new addition, Luka Koper continues to fulfil its commitment to sustainable operations and the implementation of innovative solutions that bring long-term benefits for the environment, employees, and our business partners.
