With the increase of container volumes in recent years there is also a growing need to use new solutions in the field of digitization and process optimization. One of these solutions is the OCR portal at the rail entrance of the container terminal, which was installed in December 2021. The system recognizes the container and wagon numbers, any possible damage on boxes and specific signs for hazardous cargo. This automated container and rail wagon registration helps to speed up the inbound/outbound procedures and eliminates the presence of workers on the field.

The purchase and installation of the system are part of the COMODALCE EU project. The COMODALCE project seeks to increase cooperation and coordination among multimodal freight transport stakeholders in Central Europe, using innovative ICT systems by involving some of the most important ports, rail operators and terminals creating multimodal traffic flows. As part of the pilot activity, the Luka Koper provided the development of a tool that will optimize the use of the rail network within the port in order to speed up and streamline data exchange. The European Regional Development Fund co-funded 85% of project’s activities.
