The 2024 business year was both successful and full of challenges, often putting our inventiveness and perseverance to the test. Once again, we demonstrated that the Port of Koper is a flexible and resilient system, capable of responding rapidly to changing circumstances and seizing new business opportunities at key moments. This adaptability was reflected in the Company’s performance: we exceeded most financial indicators and achieved a 3% increase in total maritime throughput. We also actively pursued the investment projects defined in our new strategic business plan, successfully bringing several major projects to completion during the year.

Net sales revenue amounted to EUR 330.1 million, representing a 6% increase compared to the previous year. Revenue from maritime throughput, container stuffing and stripping services, and other services increased, while revenue from storage fees was slightly lower due to faster cargo turnover. Despite higher operating costs resulting from additional employment, wage indexation to inflation, and depreciation, sales revenues in 2024 had a positive impact on operating profit (EBIT), which reached EUR 67 million, i.e. a 10% increase compared to 2023, as well as on net profit, which amounted to EUR 60.3 million.

New container throughput milestone reached

At the Container Terminal, a 6% increase was recorded last year, with total throughput reaching 1,133,340 TEUs, the highest figure to date. Throughput of general and liquid cargo also increased, while bulk cargo throughput was slightly lower compared to the previous year. Due to a decline in car sales in key markets, vehicle throughput decreased by 3% to 884,666 vehicles. The year was also successfully concluded at the Passenger Terminal where 125,276 passengers were recorded.

“The business results we achieved are by no means taken for granted. The year 2024 brought many uncertainties and challenges, but also new opportunities which we managed to seize effectively. We ended the year above expectations, recording a 3% increase in total maritime throughput, measured in tonnes, while our Container Terminal reached an all‑time record with 1.13 million container units handled,” said Nevenka Kržan, President of the Management Board of the Port of Koper. She also expressed satisfaction with the accelerated implementation of key investments and projects, which form part of the Company’s extensive development cycle.

55.5 million euros invested last year

Several construction sites were active in the port last year. On Pier II, construction has been underway for months on a new berth for general cargo and vehicles (Berth 12) and a 14,000-square-meter Warehouse No. 54, which will be our first largely automated and energy self-sufficient warehouse for steel products. In the hinterland of Basin III, construction is ongoing on storage areas for 3,000 vehicles (Cassette 6A), while at the Passenger Terminal a new service building for passenger reception is already in place, partly intended for public use. In 2024, we also completed the construction of five solar power plants (the largest as part of the SOPOREM project), enabling us to generate 15% of our total electricity needs from our own renewable sources, and successfully concluded two major EU-funded projects, EALING and LUKA.DT. Within these projects, we developed the Company’s energy and climate plan and introduced numerous advanced digital solutions and support systems to upgrade key port processes. Part of the project also included the acquisition of a virtual reality simulator intended for practical training of employees operating port machinery. At the very end of the year, by signing a contract with the contractor, we also launched one of the largest projects in the port’s history – the construction of the northern part of Pier I, which will continue until the end of 2027.

2024 Annual Report prepared in line with ESRS standards for the first time

The Port of Koper continues to adhere to the highest standards also in the field of sustainability reporting. In 2024, the Company replaced the previously used GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) framework with the new European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), which introduce even more consistent, precise, and transparent disclosure of sustainability activities and of the Company’s impact on the environment and all stakeholders. The sustainability section of this year’s Annual Report therefore provides the Company’s most detailed and comprehensive overview to date of the impacts that matter most both for the organisation itself and for all stakeholders across the value chain.

2025 to also be marked by extensive investments

The high investment pace will continue this year as well. Ahead of us is one of the most demanding investment projects – the extension of the northern part of the container quay, which will be carried out until the end of 2027. At the same time, we are launching procedures for the construction of additional storage capacities at the Car Terminal and continuing projects related to the climate and digital transition. In accordance with the business plan for 2025, the Luka Koper Group will allocate a total of EUR 117 million for investments, of which EUR 40.5 million, or 35% of all planned investments, will be dedicated to projects in the field of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility.
